He shared that AI recommendations for common complaints in urgent care settings often outshone those offered by human physicians initially. Notably, AI excelled at flagging issues like urinary tract infections potentially caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria and advised on ordering additional tests before prescribing medications.
However, as promising as AI’s performance appeared on paper, Dr. Pevnick pointed out a crucial aspect where human doctors still held an edge – extracting comprehensive patient histories and tailoring recommendations based on nuanced information gathered during consultations.
The retrospective analysis drew data from Cedars-Sinai Connect, an innovative virtual primary and urgent care initiative launched back in 2023 to extend healthcare accessibility through mobile platforms. This program aimed to offer Californian patients swift access to top-tier medical experts for various health needs ranging from acute conditions to preventive care.
During the study period spanning June 12 to July 14, 2024, 461 virtual urgent care visits managed by physicians were scrutinized alongside AI recommendations. These consultations primarily addressed respiratory issues along with symptoms related to urinary tract problems, vaginal concerns, vision troubles, or dental ailments.
Patients engaging with Cedars-Sinai Connect kickstart their virtual visits by detailing their health complaints and sharing basic demographic details if they are first-time users. Subsequently, an advanced AI model takes charge by conducting structured interviews through which it gathers symptom details and medical backgrounds efficiently. On average each patient interacts with the system answering about 25 questions within five minutes only!
Drawing upon both patient inputs and electronic health records data; algorithms then generate preliminary insights into potential conditions aligning with reported symptoms. Following this phase comes the presentation of likely diagnoses for patients’ symptoms enabling them to opt for video consultations with physicians available via the platform.
Moreover; embedded within these interactions are diagnosis suggestions coupled with treatment plans proposed by AI that treating physicians could access albeit requiring manual scrolling down during that timeframe’s protocol at Cedars-Sinai Connect.
Dr. Caroline Goldzweig – another co-senior author involved in leading the study – acknowledged some uncertainty surrounding whether practitioners indeed scrolled down to view prescribing guidelines; referrals; or any other management advice provided via AI systems before finalizing their clinical decisions.
Nevertheless; she emphasized how consistently higher ratings assigned to AI-generated recommendations over physician choices hinted at the significant potential harbored by incorporating effective decision support tools like AI directly into routine clinical practices for managing prevalent acute illnesses effectively.
