“Although past evidence showing causal links between modelling and getting rewarded for violence had an immediate impact on aggressive behavior in 4-year-old children, few studies have investigated long-term risks with antisocial behavior,” shared Pagani, a researcher at the Centre de recherche Azrieli du CHU Sainte-Justine. The study delved into the effects of violent television content on children, focusing on typically developing middle-class children to understand potential implications for aggression and harmful behaviors.”

As the research unfolded, close to 2,000 children were scrutinized within the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development. Parents’ reports on their child’s exposure to violent TV content at ages 3.5 and 4.5 years old were pivotal. Subsequently, at age 15, boys and girls self-reported various aspects of antisocial behavior.
The definition of screen violence encompassed physical aggression, verbal aggression, and relational aggression aimed at causing harm to others. Children are naturally drawn to high-energy violent content featuring charismatic characters like superheroes who engage in and are rewarded for aggressive acts – a factor contributing to increased exposure.

Notably, preschool violent televiewing showed a significant correlation with heightened antisocial behavior levels in boys but not girls at age 15. For boys exposed during early childhood, tendencies towards aggressive actions like hitting or stealing emerged prominently.
Pagani emphasized the urgent need for public health initiatives targeting campaigns aimed at educating parents and communities about the enduring risks associated with early exposure to media violence among young children. It was stressed that informed choices regarding screen time content could mitigate potential negative impacts down the line.
