“I have known Will since 2005. He was a student of the game as a player, and has now earned a reputation as one of the top defensive coaches in our league, proving himself by helping to win two Grey Cups with Toronto,”
In a recent announcement that shook up the Canadian football scene, the Ottawa REDBLACKS unveiled their new defensive coordinator. The man chosen for this critical role is none other than William Fields, a seasoned coach with an impressive track record.
Fields, who previously served as the co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach for the Toronto Argonauts, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new position. With three Grey Cup championships under his belt, including two during his tenure at Toronto, he is no stranger to success on the field.
“Having gone up against him over the years, we know the quality of coach and leader that he is, and are excited to add him to our staff.”
Bob Dyce, head coach of the REDBLACKS, expressed great confidence in Fields’ abilities. Dyce highlighted Fields’ deep understanding of the game and praised his leadership qualities that have been instrumental in securing victories over tough opponents.
Fields’ journey to becoming a prominent figure in Canadian football coaching has been marked by dedication and hard work. Starting as an assistant defensive backs coach for the BC Lions in 2015, he steadily climbed up the coaching ranks with stints at various teams before landing significant roles at Toronto and beyond.
After successful coaching tenures at Cypress Christian School, Simon Fraser University, Montreal Alouettes, Hamilton Tiger-Cats (as defensive backs coach), Edmonton Eskimos (as an assistant), XFL’s Tampa Bay Vipers (secondary coach), and Peru State College—Fields has honed his skills across different leagues and levels of play.
“Coach Dyce and his staff have brought a culture of work ethic and physicality to Ottawa…”
Expressing gratitude for his time with Toronto while eagerly anticipating this new chapter with the REDBLACKS family, Fields underscored his commitment to maintaining high standards of performance. He acknowledged Coach Dyce’s emphasis on work ethic and physicality within the team—a philosophy he wholeheartedly embraces as they strive towards bringing glory back to RNation by clinching another Grey Cup victory.
As a former player who graced both college football fields at Houston University from 1996 to 1999 and professional grids for teams like Calgary Stampeders—the 89th Grey Cup champions—Fields brings a unique perspective shaped by personal triumphs on-field. His journey through various football arenas including stops at Calgary Stampeders where he had notable seasons illustrates not just his versatility but also resilience in adapting to different playing styles.
With an illustrious career marked by victories both as a player and now as an esteemed coach leading one of CFL’s renowned franchises—the Ottawa REDBLACKS—William Fields stands poised to script another chapter in Canadian football history powered by passion for excellence on every yard line.
