Imagine a world where a virus thought to be contained in animals suddenly mutates, finding new ways to infect humans. This scenario is not from the latest sci-fi blockbuster; it’s a real concern raised by scientists studying the potential threat of mpox.
In a recent publication in Nature Medicine, researchers sounded the alarm about mpox, a viral infection similar to smallpox but with its own unique dangers. While traditionally transmitted from animals to humans, mpox is now exhibiting worrying signs of sustained human-to-human spread.
“The most recent outbreaks show that intimate contact is now a significant way the virus spreads. That shift in how it’s transmitted is leading to longer transmission chains and lasting outbreaks.”
These insights come from Carlos Maluquer de Motes, an expert in Molecular Virology at the University of Surrey. He points out how intimate contact has become a key mode of transmission for mpox, fostering more extended chains of infection and persistent outbreaks.
The concerns are compounded by the emergence of different clades of mpox viruses. Clades are groups of viruses sharing common ancestry, and while clade IIb viruses have been rapidly spreading, variants from clade I are also gaining traction. Alarmingly, clade I viruses exhibit higher aggressiveness and seem to be evolving specific genetic mutations that could enhance their ability to adapt to human hosts over time.
Initially confined mainly to Central Africa, mpox took the world by storm with a global outbreak in 2022. Now, multiple sub-Saharan countries are grappling with localized epidemics caused by this relentless virus. Although adults bear the brunt of current infections, experts fear that children might soon become vulnerable as well.

Dr. Maluquer de Motes emphasizes the critical need for elevated prioritization of mpox control on the global health agenda. With limited diagnostic tools and scarce antiviral treatments available, there’s an urgent call for improved surveillance systems and enhanced local capacities for producing essential resources.
Unlike smallpox which was successfully eradicated through vaccination programs due to lacking an animal reservoir – meaning it can’t ever truly disappear completely like its predecessor-smallpox-mpix presents an entirely different challenge due largely because there exists such thing called “animal reservoirs” wherein these diseases hide themselves away each time making them particularly tricky targets indeed no matter what measures one might take eradicate once & all just isn’t possible without concerted international effort towards implementing key strategies such point-of-care testing
